Quick Overview

Slovenia began to open up to modernity at the end of the 1880s. It was in this climate that four painters with a passion for outdoor painting (Ivan Grohar, Rihard Jakopi?, Matija Jama and Matej Sternen) called themselves ''impressionists''.

Their style, however, drew less on original Impressionism than on its evolution towards gestural Expressionism, witnessed in the works of Monet and Van Gogh. Their ambition was to transcend landscape painting's anecdotal realism in favour of an emotional power some of them strove for in compositions verging on the abstract.
In addition to this group of artists, the catalogue will include an overview of the creative scene in Ljubljana between 1890 and 1920 which boasted an impressive amount of sculptors, a rich production of illustrations and caricatures, the revival of photography and architectural constructions that turned the capital into a modern city.
