En quelques mots

Built specifically to host an exceptional "retrospective of French art" at the Exposition Universelle of 1900, the Petit Palais was converted into a museum, now known as the City of Paris Fine Arts Museum, on 11th December 1902.

The museum’s collection has expanded and grown richer over the years thanks to numerous donations and an active purchasing policy. Two major themes characterise the pieces: firstly a collection of ancient art from Ancient Greece to the 18th century and also a collection of French art spanning the artistic trends from 1880 to 1914, covering all areas of visual arts. This guide aims to provide visitors with the keys to understanding and fully appreciating many of the museum’s flagship art pieces. Following the guided tour of the museum, the guide attempts to present the historical, cultural and artistic context of the works by placing them in their window display or display room.
